ROBERT S. HOSHOCK, 1917-2005 Farmer led the drive for Ayersville sewers

DEFIANCE - Robert S. Hoshock, 87, a lifelong Defiance County farmer who helped bring water and sewer service to the rural hamlet of Ayersville, Ohio, died yesterday in the Laurels of Defiance nursing home.

He died of kidney failure, his son, Richard, said.

Mr. Hoshock was a founding board member and a past secretary and treasurer of the Ayersville Water and Sewer District, which extended Defiance city utilities out to Ayersville about 35 years ago after water-quality problems arose there, the son said.

A past president of the Defiance County Farm Bureau, Mr. Hoshock raised corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa on up to 900 acres near Ayersville in partnership with his brother, Gerald Hoshock.

In younger years, the brothers also tended a dairy herd of between 20 to 30 Guernsey cows and up to 10,000 egg-laying hens.

"He took a lot of pride in raising good crops and kept his farm buildings immaculate," Richard Hoshock said of his father.

Mr. Hoshock also maintained a locally renowned rose garden in his front yard, in which he often experimented with different colors and varieties of roses.

He also was active in his church, serving St. Mary's Catholic Church as a councilman, Eucharistic minister, and in funeral ministry, in which he presided at wake services.

"A lot of people said he had quite a gift" for counseling grieving families, Richard Hoshock said.

A lifelong Defiance-area resident, Mr. Hoshock served in the U.S. Army's veterinary corps during World War II, with postings in Burma, India, Australia, and New Guinea. Reaching the rank of Technician 4, he was a pharmacy assistant whose duties involved the care of Army horses.

In 1951, he married Miriam L. Carvin, and she survives. Also surviving are sons, John and Richard Hoshock; brother Gerald C. Hoshock; three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

The body will be in the Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home, Defiance, after 7 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m tomorrow. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Defiance.

The family suggests tributes to the church, the St. Mary's Food Pantry, or Defiance County Hospice.

Robert S. HOSHOCK and Mariam L. CARVIN had the following children:

child + 327 i. John5 HOSHOCK (still alive).

child + 328 ii. Richard J.'Dick' HOSHOCK (still alive).
