George H. Hofmann, a councilman in Northwood when it incorporated as a village in 1962, died of cancer Wednesday in the Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was 85.

Residents of the former Ross Township voted to incorporate in August, 1962, to prevent annexation by the city of Toledo. The new village’s first council took office in December of that year, said Charles Kozina, current Northwood city councilman, who served with Mr. Hofmann when it was still a village. It became a city in 1982.

"He was always involved in committees for the township, and when it became a village, he was interested," Mr. Kozina said. "That was when we initiated zoning in the village, and he was involved in that."

Mr. Hofmann was born and raised in Toledo. He worked briefly for Toledo Edison before he was drafted into the U.S. Army near the conclusion of World War II, said his son, the Rev. George W. Hofmann.

After the war, Mr. Hofmann worked for his father in the family furniture business from 1945 to 1969.

The family operated furniture stores at Bancroft and Cherry streets, Sylvania Avenue and Jackman Road, and several other locations in Toledo, Mr. Hofmann said.

"Working in the family business isn’t a fun thing to do, because you’re never off the job," Mr. Hofmann said. "Dad’s most successful career move was when he went to work for Value City Furniture on Woodville Road as an assistant manager. He loved that job more than any other he had in his life."

Mr. Hofmann worked at the furniture retail store for 17 years until 1992, when he fell and broke both knees while carrying a lounge chair to a customer’s truck. "He had to have both knees replaced, and that forced him into an early retirement," Mr. Hofmann said.

After recovering from his injury, Mr. Hofmann volunteered at St. Charles Mercy Hospital in Oregon.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Ruth; son, the Rev. George W.; daughters, Barbara Miller and Donna Golembiewski; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. today in St. Mark Lutheran Church.

The family suggests tributes to Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg Township, the American Cancer Society, or Otterbein-Portage Valley Retirement Community.
