23. Josephine Barbara "Josie"³ DEHAUS (Elizabeth² UMBS, Anna Maria "Mary"¹ SCHWARTZ, Joannis Adami^A) (#8) was born in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH 6 JUL 1889. Josephine died 24 MAY 1985 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH, at age 95. The doctors believed her life could be extended by treatments but she felt that her life had been served to capacity and she refused treatments. She was in the nursing home for only a few months prior to her death, and her mind was clear and sharp right up to the time of death. Her body was interred MAY 1985 in Riverside Cem., Defiance Co., OH.

She married Charles Delbert "Red" BARBER 11 JUN 1913 in St. John's Cath., Defiance Co., OH. (Charles Delbert "Red" BARBER is #7.) Charles was born 3 OCT 1885 in Stryker, Williams Co., OH. he was born premature, at approx. 7 to 8 months, his parents were visiting his grandmother at Stryker when his mother went into labor. Charles was the son of John Charles BARBER and Barbara Adeline MILLER.

Charles died 8 APR 1968 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH, at age 82. Kidney Failure, Stroke, all caused by diabeties

His body was interred 10 APR 1968 in Riverside Cem., Defiance Co., OH. Defiance Crescent News Mon. April 8, 1968 Charles D. Barber, 82, 846 Kentner, died at 1:10 am. today in Defiance Hospital. He had been hospitalized here and in Fort Wayne since Feb. 29. He was born in Stryker, (his grandmother Jane Brown's home) Oct. 3, 1885, a son of John C. and B. Adeline (Miller) Barber. on June 11, 1913 he and Josephine DeHaus were married. Surviving are the wife; one daughter, Katherine Barber Port Clinton; three sons, Thomas, Rhode Island; James rt. 6; and Charles J. 715 Westwood dr. and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son John D., three sisters, Mrs Anna Gingrich, Mrs Emma Rice and Miss Minnie Barber, and one brother William. He was a member of St. Johns Catholic Church. For 18 years he was a barber and in 1940 began working for Machine Screw Products Co., retiring in 1954. He then opened a lawn mower repair shop and in 1964 retired again due to health. Services will be in St. John's Catholic Church at 10 am. Wed. with Msgr. John J. Vogel officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 8 pm. Tuesday in Mast and Mock Funeral home. By William J. Barber "At the age of 16 (early Feb 1902) grandpa lost his lower right leg just below the knee in a auger at the Hicksville elevator, He had fallen off the back of a wagon into the auger, so all his life he had a wooden leg. The Hicksville elevator was operated by Charles Gingrich his brother-in-law. He was staying at His Sister & Brother-in-law due to the fact she was expecting a child. Grandpa had dark red hair lots of freckles and had brown eyes. He was somewhat color blind too! He attended college and became a teacher at Defiance High School teaching Finishing Class (shop class or industrial arts). He taught for two years and did not like teaching so he switched professions. He began working as a telegraph operator for the B & O RR for a couple of years. He also was a carpenter early in his life working for his father's construction company, and was a instructor for the Civilian Consevation Corps. during the depression. He also went to barber school at the advice of his former brother in law Pres Rice and opened a Barber shop in Defiance below the Valentine thearter, later moving just up 5th street near the old canal. He operated the barber business until his retirement at age 69. During WWII he also worked second shift at the Defiance Screw Machine Products as a tool & die maker. At age 69 he opened a saw sharpening and lawn mower sharpening - repair shop on Davidson St., in Defiance, and operated this until age 80. Charles was very close to his grandmother Jane, and it was said by many she spoiled him." She also delivered Charles (her grandson) who was born two months premature. This may have played a role in her spoiling him? It was also said by many that he survived his early birth only due the care of his grandmother who was an excellent midwife.

He love fishing and hunting!

His middle name comes from a slight change from his grandfather Barber's name, Adalbert

She was baptized JUL 1889 in St. Johns Cath., Defiance Co., OH. When Josephine was age 24 and Charles Delbert "Red" BARBER was age 28 they became the parents of John Delbert BARBER 27 MAY 1914 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. When Josephine was age 27 and Charles Delbert "Red" BARBER was age 31 they became the parents of Katherine Mary Elizabeth BARBER 1 MAY 1917 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. When Josephine was age 31 and Charles Delbert "Red" BARBER was age 35 they became the parents of Thomas Anthony BARBER Sr. 21 DEC 1920 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. born on the Feast of St. Thomas so that is where Josephine got the his name!

When Josephine was age 38 and Charles Delbert "Red" BARBER was age 42 they became the parents of James Henry BARBER 22 MAR 1928 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. When Josephine was age 43 and Charles Delbert "Red" BARBER was age 46 they became the parents of Charles Joseph BARBER 8 AUG 1932 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. By Her Grandson; William J. Barber whom she spoiled. Grandma Jo as all us grandchildren called her was a large framed lady and loved to eat. She knew very little about her father who died when she was about a year old. She was a very strong minded woman who kept her family in line, and even up to the last minute of her life, she stayed in tune with all family functions. All her children called her "Josie", not very often did they use mom.

Early in the morning at a mass at St. John's Catholic Church in Defiance, OH two people were wed! Charles Delbert Barber and Josephine Barbara DeHaus. Charles did convert from an Episcopal to a Catholic at this mass too! His father J. C. was Catholic and his mother B. A. was an Episcopal) After the wedding mass they walked to the DeHaus home at 846 Kentner St. and the maid of honor Kate DeHaus made them a late breakfast. Later in the day they walked thru downtown Defiance to the reception hall.

Grandma Jo was a good at listening to people and helping them in their emotional needs. At times her friends would call her for advice, which Grandpa would say "she should have be a psychiatrist" or "is she on that phone again?"

She remained very mentally connected in life and even at age 95+ and earlier in the day on her date of death "she complained about Ronald Reagan as president!" but then she said "the pendulum has to swing even in politics." and she understood why he was president.

Grandma had a lot of problems related to EDS-H, she even was partially bed ridden post partum my Dad James H. in 1928, it went away when she became pregnant with her son Charles J. in 1931, Probably POTS based on the description from her daughter Kay Barber. EDS-H = Ehlers Danlos Syndrome - Hypermobile POTS = Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome She inherited EDS-H from her mother.

Grandma Jo had severe arthritis and had her hips joint replaced(2x). She also had it quite severe in her right shoulder and after 95 it appeared she had a full shoulder seperation or dislocation.. I think from her overall joint problems it appeared she may have had EDS type III joint hypermobility. She did indicate that at age 40 she began having severe joint pains ie. hips, shoulders, spine, etc. She also had blood pressure issues later in life and seem to add salt to her diet to help which leads one to believe EDS. She also had a stomach hiatal hernia, gerd and motility issues. Her skin did have some sagging between the wrist and elbow. Could be a classic type II, though her skin was velvet in type and she looked much younger than her age leading one to think EDS Hypermobility. She had a severe case of trapezio metacarpal (left thumb)

Grandma Jo and her sister Kate both had hearing problems that began in mid life but became severe later in life. This also appears in several other cousins to her, as did the early gray hair.(20+ or - year old)

Grandma Jo had low blood pressure in her life but late in life and her sister Kate had very high blood pressure later in life. Salt seem to help her in early life. My dad did the same. Both He and Grandma had AAA, and enlarged Aorta.

Her hair grayed very early in life at arround 20 years of age, severe large joint problems, hietal hernia, low blood pressure, which leads me to believe she may have had EDS Type III joint hypermobility, She also had Hiatus Hernia, based on Aunt Kay's description she most likely had post partum POTS until becomming pregnant(Charles) duration was 3.5 years based on her description. She was bedridden and could not go verticle.

49 ii. Katherine Mary Elizabeth BARBER (#26) was born in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH 1 MAY 1917. Katherine died 26 DEC 2005 in Fremont, Sandusky Co., OH, at age 88. Her body was interred 30 DEC 2005 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. Riverside Cem. next to Charles J. Barber

She was baptized 5 MAY 1917 in St. John's Cath., Defiance Co., OH. Kay Barber retired From the Port Clinton School as a High School Guidance counselor. She also taught English there at Latty OH., and Willard, OH. She resided in Port Clinton, OH. She began teaching at Port Clinton in 1953. Toledo Blade 12/28/05:

Katherine M. Barber, 88, of Port Clinton, OH, died Monday, December 26, 2005, at Fremont Memorial Hospital, Fremont, OH. Katherine was born in Defiance, OH on May 1, 1917, to Charles D. and Josephine B. (DeHaus) Barber. She was a retired school teacher and guidance counselor. Katherine taught school in Port Clinton in 1953 and also taught school in Latty, OH and Willard, OH. She attended St. Johns Catholic School 1st thru 8th grade then went on to Defiance High School. She then received her BA from Defiance College and her MA from Ohio State University. Katherine was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Port Clinton, OH. She also was a member and past president of the Ottawa County Retired Teachers Association, the Port Clinton Christian Women's Club, the Home Economics Club, current President of the 88 Circle, a member of the Ottawa County Humane Society and the Saturday a.m. Prayer Breakfast. Katherine was also a Wide World Shop Volunteer. Survivors include brother, James H. Barber of Defiance, OH; 6 nieces and 6 nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John D. Barber, Thomas A. Barber and Charles J. Barber. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, December 29, 2005, at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, Port Clinton, OH. A Mass of Christian Burial conducted by Father Raymond Ensman, at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 30, 2005, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Port Clinton, OH, where the body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Defiance, OH. Memorial contributions may be given to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or the Ottawa County Humane Society. severe arthritis in left hand mainly the left thumb, same as her mother and brother James. EDS joint hypermobility, her left thumb was sublaxed out of the joint for many of her later years(trapezio metacarpal). she had minor curvature of the spine.

MVP - mitrial valve prolapse, a heart valve problem. cause EDS? She appeared to have congestive heart failure very late in life, but it may have been caused by MVP too! She did smoke most of her early life as a teacher but quit at or slightly before retirement.

although not an official diagnosis it appeared she was developing Parkinsons very late in her life due to a shuffled walk, hunched over and her face became straight with not much muscle control. This may have attributed to her fall at the ceramic shop.

Cause of death was heart failure as primary and pulmonary embolism (blood clots) all resulted from sugery on her hip to repair a fracture from a fall.
