Umbs house at Kentner St

An early picture of the Umbs house at 846 Kentner St. Defiance, OH with John N.O. & Mary Swartz) Umbs

3. Anna Maria "Mary"1 SCHWARTZ (Joannis AdamiA)(1) (#151) was born in Heddesheim, Rheinland, Prussia 31 MAR 1825. Anna died 22 NOV 1889 in Defiance Co., OH., at age 64.(2) Her body was interred NOV 1889 in Riverside Cem., Defiance Co., OH.

She married John Nicolaus O. UMBS 25 JAN 1852 in Heddesheim, Rheinland, Prussia. (John Nicolaus O. UMBS is #150.) John was born 18 JUL 1825 in Heddesheim, Rheinland, Prussia. John(3) was the son of Joannis UMBS and Annae Mariae KRAFT. John died 10 MAY 1897 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH, at age 71.(4) He died in his home at 846 Kentner St. Defiance, OH. This Home was built by Fredrick Umbs, John's Brother. It is believed that the cause of death was asthma or something related.

His body was interred 12 MAY 1897 in Riverside Cem., Defiance Co., OH. John N. O. Umbs served in the Civil war in the 67th. Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry Co. E., entered service at age 40 on November 1, 1864 for 1 year of service, and was mustered out on November 2, 1865 at Richmond Va. as term expired. He Homestead 160 acres of land in Highland twp. of Defiance Co., west of Dohoney Rd. at the Richland Twp. line, of which he sold 80 acres or the south half to the Schultz family. He raised a nephew Fredrick Umbs Jr., and his sisters, (a son and daughters of Fredrick Umbs after Fred and his wife divorced.) besides his own children. Adam Henrich came to America to live with his uncle John N. O. Umbs. Adam & Barbara (Huffman) Henrich lived with them for a short time after they were married and until they could get established, according to the 1890 city of Defiance directory, later, he also had grandchildren Anna, Kate, and Henry DeHaus living with Him at 846 Kentner St.(formerly Fredrick Umbs Home). According to Grandma Jo (DeHaus) Barber, Adam Henrich was a nephew of John Umbs, two of John's sisters remained in Prussia, and did not immigrate to the U.S. as Adam came here after his mother died. He had other Brother whom remained in Prussia. Adam Henrich's mother name was either Agnes or Margareth. From records he was still farming in Highland Twp., Defiance Co., OH on 4 JUN 1880. I do remember my grt. Aunt Kate mentioning that she walked to the farm on Dohoney Rd. from her home on Kentner St. near the 2nd ward park in Defiance, or about 8 miles. He still was farming in Highland Twp., the same farm on Dohoney Rd. during 1890 per county records. In his later years he also resided at 846 Kentner St. during the winter months. It was my understanding that he died at that location of emphysema.

When Anna was age 27 and John Nicolaus O. UMBS was age 27 they became the parents of John UMBS 9 DEC 1852 in Heddesheim, Rheinland, Prussia.(5) I found a baptism record for him listed as 11 DEC 1852 Katholisch, Heddesheim, Rheinland, Preussen , This probably would be correct as it came from the catholic chruch, so his date of birth I have listed as May 1853 probably is incorrect. May 1853 came from death certificate record.

Anna immigrated to destination unknown 13 APR 1854. When Anna was age 30 and John Nicolaus O. UMBS was age 30 they became the parents of Elizabeth UMBS 8 MAR 1856 in Defiance Co., OH..(6) When Anna was age unknown and John Nicolaus O. UMBS was age unknown they became the parents of Catherine "Katie" UMBS circa 1863 in Defiance Co., OH..(7) Grandma Josephine Barber always said that Schwartz was incorrect and it was Swartz? Catholic church records indicate that it is Schwartz. Her marriage record list her name as Maria Anna Schwartz

Anna had Gray-early hair.

Anna Maria "Mary" SCHWARTZ and John Nicolaus O. UMBS had the following children:

Her body was interred 14 JUN 1890 in Riverside Cem., Defiance Co., OH. Grandma Jo always said they called her Tante Umbs or Tante Kate, but I did see it as Katie Umbs too! Tante in german mean Aunt? Need to find her baptism record?
