Two sones, given names knknown, of James' earlier marriage (Ann or Rebecca?) lost their lives in the Revolutionary War.

Note that James Barber himself was a Revolutionary War Soldier, as he served as a private three months in 1775 guarding the shores of South Kingstown, RI and in 1778 he served fro one month in General Sullivan's expedition to the Island of Rhode Island and was wounded in the thigh. Healing tood three or four months before he could go on duty again. Then in the spring of 1781 saw him on guard duty at South Kingstown and Howland's Ferry.
