2. Anthony Henry1 DEHAUS (Henry J.A) (#142) was born in Bavaria, Germany 20 FEB 1848. Anthony died 17 AUG 1890 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH, at age 42. His body was interred AUG 1890 in Riverside Cem., Defiance Co., OH.

He married Elizabeth UMBS 18 MAY 1876 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH.(1) According to Defiance County marriage records they were married in St. John's Catholic Church, but I ask the church for the record and they could not find one?

On today’s date 143 years ago my great grandparents were married in St. John’s Catholic Church in Defiance, OH: Anthony DeHaus and Elizabeth Umbs, just two people getting married and eventually having 4 surviving children. It was very unfortunate that Anthony died just 14 years into their marriage. My grandmother Barber was only 6 months old when her father died. Fast forward to 1928 when my father was born, grandma from the moment of Dads birth had a serious medical problem, they did not know what was wrong with her other than she would pass out when she tried to get out of bed. Today we know it as Postpartum Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome aka Postpartum POTS, caused by a defect in her genes passed to her from her mother. This is when the widow grandmother Elizabeth comes into play, she raised my father till he was about 4 years old, and she kept the other two children Kay and Tom in line too! Grandmother completely recovered only to find herself pregnant again with Charles. Elizabeth continued to live with my grandparents and their children until her death in 1940. She was a very special grandmother to my late Father, a bond that continued even until his death. (Elizabeth UMBS is #141.)

Elizabeth was born 8 MAR 1856 in Defiance Co., OH.(2) Elizabeth was the daughter of John Nicolaus O. UMBS and Mariae Anna "Mary" SCHWARTZ. Elizabeth died 5 JAN 1940 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH, at age 83. death location: 846 Kentner St.

Her body was interred 8 JAN 1940 in Riverside Cem., Defiance Co., OH. Obit: Mrs. DeHaus, 83, Taken by death, Rites will be held monday in St. Johns Catholic Church. Mrs Elizabeth DeHaus, widow of Anthony DeHaus, died today at 6 a.m. at her home, 846 Kintner St., after suffering a cerebral Thrombusis several days ago. the body has been removed to the Mansfield Funeral Home where it will remain until the services which will be held a 9 a.m. in the church Msgr. George H. Lang will officiate and burial will be in the riverside cem., Mrs DeHaus was born in Defiance on March 8 1856, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Umbs. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Charles Barber at home and Miss Catherine DeHaus, Laport IN. and two (4 is correct) grandchildren. four children proceded her in death.

Acording to my Dad, James H. Barber and his sister Kay, she suffered with bad joints but mostly the shoulders, from descriptions and other family members being diagnosed with EDS-H it appears she had the this problem and many have inherited it from her! She also was very short in stature at about 4'-6" or 4'-8" most likely all related to H-EDS

She was also very interested in Genealogy or Family History and started pulling together information to build up to several card board boxes of information on her Umbs family.

Anthony immigrated to destination unknown 28 JUL 1873. departed Antwerp then to England, then to the USA, Defiance, Ohio

When Anthony was age 29 and Elizabeth UMBS was age 21 they became the parents of Anna Maria DEHAUS 21 APR 1877 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. When Anthony was age 30 and Elizabeth UMBS was age 22 they became the parents of Catherine Elizabeth "Kate" DEHAUS 20 JUN 1878 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. When Anthony was age 31 and Elizabeth UMBS was age 23 they became the parents of Henry Joseph DEHAUS 24 DEC 1879 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. When Anthony was age 36 and Elizabeth UMBS was age 28 they became the parents of John DEHAUS 2 MAY 1884 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. When Anthony was age 37 and Elizabeth UMBS was age 29 they became the parents of August DEHAUS 26 AUG 1885 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. When Anthony was age 41 and Elizabeth UMBS was age 33 they became the parents of Josephine Barbara "Josie" DEHAUS 6 JUL 1889 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. According to Josephine (DeHaus) Barber her father came to America to avoid a draft or left the the German army. She did not why he came to Defiance Ohio, but she knew he had a brother in Chicago that was married and had several daughters and a son. (note they also lived for a short time in Defiance, OH & Nebraska) No one new who Anthony's and Andrew's parents were except that they departed from Hanover, Germany. It appears he may have been born in Bamburg Germany. Anthony worked at the Trunbull Wagon Works in Defiance. He died of a enlarged spleen which had given him trouble for about three years prior to his death. Leukemia was suspect. I need to continue on research such as naturalization, date and location of immigration Baptism as a Catholic prior to or during his wedding. Anthony's brother that lived briefly in Defiance, Nebraska, and also Chicago, Illinois, and we have a family photo that was taken in Troy NE. he was named Andrew, as at one time I found a Andrew Deyhouse in Defiance and Aunt Kay mentioned that she remembered her Aunt Kate talking about a Andy DeHauser and a Willie DeHauser that came to Defiance at times. They spelled the name as Deause or Dause but mostly Dauser? Also need to check out Dauss and Daub as the b in prussian is actually ss. It now seems it could have been DeHeus Anthony DeHaus and family resided on Harrison Ave. between Pierce & Warren according to the 1881-1882 city directory. And in 1887 the directory shows the family at Kentner St. I reviewed LDS microfilm files and it did not show a Dehaus name in Hanover but did show Deheus? There are DeHeus in the Neatherlands too! Dad seemed to think his Grandmother once talk of some Dutch blood in the Dehaus family? Another family member mentioned possibility could they trace back to Switzerland?

enlarge spleen was the cause of death, and was a prolong problem prior to death, three years or more, acording to my research he may have also had heart problems. One may assume that he may have had endocarditis based on the descriptions given. It does based on Great Aunt Kate description that he may have had Leukemia.

Anthony Henry DEHAUS and Elizabeth UMBS had the following children:

child 5 ii. Catherine Elizabeth "Kate" DEHAUS (#144) was born in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH 20 JUN 1878. Catherine died 17 JUL 1964 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH, at age 86. Her body was interred 20 JUL 1964 in Riverside Cem., Defiance Co., OH. She was baptized date unknown in St. John's Cath., Defiance Co., OH. Kate worked in several knitting or textile type factories. In towns like South Bend, Laport, and Kokomo, IN. In the 1930 census she was living in La Porte, IN working in a Woolen Mill (listed as Dayhouse)

She did tell me many stories about the Umbs families, of which it appeared she new very well. This was due to the fact she lived a time with her grandfather John N. Umbs on Dohoney Rd. for several years off and on when her father was sick and prior to his death. She owned the house at 846 Kentner that her sister Josephine and brother in law Charles Barber lived in. This house was built by Fred Umbs, but enlarged by Charles Barber. She did know a little less of the DeHaus and or Dauser family but still was sufficient in telling me stories. I just wished I could remember them all. She did speak of Andy Dauser and also Willy Dauser. Her cooking abilities were second to no one, probably the best cook I ever knew, and she was very good at baking too! She was excellent at making soups! Some of this passed onto my Dad James H. Barber as he also was a very good cook. She was my nanny when I was very young.

Catherine had drk brn hair.

nearly deaf, possibility may have been caused by the high blood pressure? or EDSIII, both her mother and sister Josephine had EDS. She did have high pitched, pulsative tinnitus.

died of a heart attack, and also had very high blood pressure most of her life

very high most of her life

child + 6 iii. Henry Joseph DEHAUS was born 24 DEC 1879.

child 7 iv. John DEHAUS (#146) was born in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH 2 MAY 1884. John died 23 JUL 1885 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH, at age 1. His body was interred JUL 1885 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. He was baptized date unknown in St. John's Cath., Defiance Co., OH. Dates I had from grandma was 1883 and 1884 but county records are what I listed.

grandma called his death summer complaint?

child 8 v. August DEHAUS (#147) was born in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH 26 AUG 1885. August died 4 AUG 1886 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH, at age unknown. His body was interred AUG 1886 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH. He was baptized date unknown in St. John's Cath., Defiance Co., OH. I did find records of his birth and it listed as 26 Aug 1886, so does that mean the death date is 4 AUG 1887? Information from grandma maybe incorrect?

Grandma described his death as summer complaint?
