Frank Joseph Ruck (born Franz Josef Ruck) was a butcher, owned a meat market and a Saloon in Chicago in the 1890’s through his death in 1901. He was the youngest of seven siblings. All his siblings (except for Carl who died at the age of 3) also immigrated to Chicago. His father-in-law, Andrew Dauser was a butcher/proprietor who owned meat markets and saloons in Chicago as well. Frank J. Ruck died of blood poisoning on October 30, 1901, in his residence at 148 Milwaukee Ave (near his Saloon). The blood poisoning (probably Sepsis) was most likely a result of poor footwear and hygiene while working in the Union Stock Yards. Shortly after he died, a historic 16-block fire cremated his remains in his residence while waiting for funeral home. This resulted in his name making headlines in newspapers across the county the following day. His wife, Emma, continued to run the meat market until she married Charles Fleck in 1905. A few weeks after his death, on November 21, 1901, his son Frank Joseph Ruck (Sr.) was born. He would grow up to also become a butcher. In fact, he was rather successful and around the age of 30 retired early, sold his meat markets and invested everything in a local Chicago bank. This was roughly 6 months before the stock market crashed and the great depression began. Having lost everything, he moved his family to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. They spent the next decade there. He ran the Northwest Hotel and Cafe, then the meat department at National Tea Company. He returned the family to Chicago in the early 1940’s. Living above his Market at 2124 W. Roscoe Street. Eventually, two of his sons, Bob & Ken, would go into the butcher/meat market business as well. He died January 25, 1964, of a heart attack. He was working as a Bailiff in the County Building. While leading a Jury back to the court room he collapsed after stepping off an elevator.
