HEY BILL,

I FINALLY GOT SOMETHING WRITTEN, ABOUT MY DAD. HOPE THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED.

THOMAS ANTHONY JOSEPH BARBER SR. WAS BORN IN DEFIANCE, OHIO. HE WENT TO DEFIANCE HIGH SCHOOL. HE ENLISTED, IN THE U. S. NAVY, DURING WWII. HE WAS STATIONED, IN NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND. HE SERVED, AS A SECOND CLASS, MACHINIST MATE, WHILE IN THE PHILIPPINES. THERE, HE HELPED BUILD AIR FIELDS AND BUILDINGS, AS WELL AS OTHER DUTIES. HE WAS REQUIRED TO CARRY A WEAPON.

WHILE IN THE PHILIPPINES, HE CONTRACTED MALARIA, WHICH HE SUFFERED FROM, THE REST OF HIS LIFE. AFTER HE WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED FROM THE NAVY, HE RETURNED TO PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND, WHERE HE MARRIED, IN 1945.

HE STARTED WORKING AT CLOVER BEAD AND JEWELRY, AS A MACHINIST. WHILE WORKING THERE, HE DECIDED TO START HIS OWN MACHINE SHOP BUSINESS, TAB ENTERPRISES INC, IN THE BASEMENT OF HIS HOME. AFTER A FEW YEARS, THE BUSINESS GREW AND HE MOVED ALL THE EQUIPMENT TO A NEW LOCATION, ON YORK AVE., IN PAWTUCKET. NOT LONG AFTER HE STARTED, TABCO PRODUCTS. THIS NEW BUSINESS SOLD TOOLS TO OTHER MACHINE SHOP COMPANIES.

A FEW UNKNOWN THINGS, TO MOST FAMILY MEMBERS, HE WAS AN INVENTOR AND DESIGNER. HE HELPED THE HASBRO TOY CO., IN PAWTUCKET, TO DESIGN AND CREATE THE FIRST MOVABLE G.I. JOE DOLL. HE DESIGNED AND BUILT A MACHINE, FOR THE SCHOOL HOUSE CANDY CO., ALSO IN PAWTUCKET, TO CREATE THE FIRST CIRCULAR ROPE, MULTICOLORED LOLLIPOP.

I KNOW THERE WERE MANY MANY OTHER INVENTIONS HE DESIGNED AND BUILT, BUT THOSE TWO WERE HIS MOST NOTABLE ONES. '' SADLY, HE WAS NEVER PAID FOR HIS DESIGN WORK, AS THEY USED THE RUSE, OF HIS NOT HAVING A COLLEGE EDUCATION, TO DENY HIM COMPENSATION. HE WAS ONLY PAID FOR THE ACTUAL MACHINES HE BUILT AND SOLD TO THE DIFFERENT COMPANIES.

THANK YOU, BILL, FOR ALLOWING ME TO GIVE A LITTLE INFORMATION CONCERNING MY DAD. HOPE IT HELPS.

MUCH LOVE.

SINCERELY,

COUSIN KATHY BARBER DOYLE 8/22/2021
