Sarah was the daughter of Martin NULL and Sarah Agatha SITTERLY. Sarah died 2 OCT 1903 in Defiance, Defiance Co., OH, at age 75. Her body was interred 5 OCT 1903 in O.RiversideCem, Defiance, OH. The census indicated she had 7 children? 2 children are unaccounted for? They may have or most likely died as infants? October 2, 1903 DEATH OF A PIONEER Mrs. Sarah Miller Passed Away in North Defiance Death claimed a pioneer Defiance lady at 10 o'clock this morning, when the spirit of Mrs. Sarah Miller, wife of the veteran carpenter, John Miller, took it's flight heavenward. The aged womanhad been in feeble health since the 30 of last June when she fell and fractured her thigh. This affliction, coupled with her extreme age, proved fatal. She had been bedfast since andsuffered the greater portion of the time. Mrs Miller, prior to her marriage was Miss Sarah Null. She was born in Homersteen, German, November 22, 1827. If she had lived just one month longer she would have reached the age of 76 years. The deceased came to this country at the age of 6 years. She was married to Mr. Miller near Canton 57 years ago, and had been a resident of this City for 53 years, coming here when Defiance was a log cabin village in the wilds. She was the mother of 7 children, 4 of whom are living. They are John Ira, William H. Charles L. and Mrs John Barber. She raised from childhood a grand-daughter, Miss Gwendolyn Dellet, who lived with her. Her husband, who survives, is 80 years past. At death's bedside were two aged sisters of Mrs Miller, Mrs Barbara Cook of Toledo, and Mrs Hannah Bates of this City. The taking away of his wife at this time when the golden noon of their wedded life had long passed, has left the aged husband deep in sorrow. The funeral will occur from this house on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, interment to be made in Riverside cemetery, the deceased having purchased the first lot in the beautiful spot. "John Miller Passes Away" "Was a pioneer Resident of Defiance and well known." John Miller, amoung the oldest resident of the city is dead. A man who has lived in Defiance since the place was but a mere village and has watched the development of the city to its present stage; a carpenter who helped to construct many of the principal buildings and dwellings, has passed to the great beyond. Mr. Miller died yesterday afternoon after an illness of some months, the past winter, wasting his remaining strength, old age, with a complication of troubles was the cause of his demise. The deceased was born in Canton, Stark Co... and was thus 82 yrs. 1 mo. and 20 days. In 1849, Mr. Miller came to Defiance and since that time has been a continuous resident of the city. Mr. Miller was a quiet man, and for many years has resided at the corner of Sessions and N. Clinton Streets, North Defiance. His granddaughter, Miss Gwendoline Dellet, has been a constant care taker of the aged man since the demise of his wife several years ago. This grand-daughter was the sole source of enjoyment of the venerable man during declining days. She, together with his children who lived here, were continously at his side. Mr. Miller served his life well, and up until a few years ago, even when eighty years old, he walked several miles in the country an did a hard day's work at carpentering. The only office he ever held was that of a member of the board of health, and even in his advanced age, he would stay at the meetings through until the late hours of the night, and then walk home alone to his abiding place across the river. The deceased was married to Miss Agatha Null in 1846. Five children were born to them. Four of whom are alive. They are: John I., William H., Charles L., Mrs Barber (Barbara A.) wife of contractor John C. Barber, all living in this city. A Daughter Mrs. Margaret H. Dellet died in 1877, leaving a daughter.(Gwendolyn) The deceased also leaves eleven grandchildren, a brother, Samuel Miller of Angola, IN. and two sisters, Mrs Margaret Nuce of Lima, OH. and Mrs. John M. (Catherine) Richard of Stryker, OH. Mr. Miller was the oldest living member of the Fort Defiance Lodge Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. He had been a member of this order from the time it was instituted over forty years ago, and his heart and soul was wrapped up in its teachings. "This order will turn out in a body at the funeral, and will have charge of the services, which will occur thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the house. Rev. A.B. Murphy of the Baptist Church will preach the funeral sermon.. Interment will be made in Riverside Cemetery.
