240. Benjamin B.7 BARBER SR (Thomas6, Thomas5, Moses4, James A.3, James T.2, Thomas1) (#106) was born in Hopkinton, Washington Co., RI OCT 1765. Benjamin died 17 JAN 1854 in Galway, Saratoga Co., NY, at age 88. His body was interred JAN 1854 in Saratoga Co., NY.

He married Mary "Polly" CRANDALL circa 1795 in Fulton Co., NY. May be Westerly, Washington Co., RI (Mary "Polly" CRANDALL is #107.)

Mary was born 29 OCT 1774 in Westerly, Washington Co., RI. 22 OCT 1772 on her tomb stone and she was also listed as the wife of Benjamin Barber Mary was the daughter of Pvt. Elijah CRANDALL and Eunice BROUGHTON.

Mary died 12 MAR 1863 in Marquette Co., WI, at age 88. or 1853 as some have said, but I feel 1863 is correct because she was listed as Polly 85 yrs old in the 1860 census in Bradford K. Barber family.

Her body was interred MAR 1863 in Marquette Co., WI. Westfield South Cem. Marquette Co., WI. dates on tomb stone read Mary Barber wife of Benj. Barber b. 22 Oct 1772 d 12 Mar 1853/63(?) She was alive and on the 1860 census living with her son Bradford K. Barber at age 85. Therefore the date of 1853 is incorrect. Use 1863. Polly went to live with her son Bradford K. Barber after her husband Benjamin died. By Barbara Jordanger: Polly's Story

My name is Mary Crandall Barber, but you can call me Polly. In DAR there are Real Daughters who are daughters of Revolutionary Patriots. I did not live long enough to join the DAR, but I am the Daughter and Granddaughter of patriots. I am a True Daughter. My father, Elijah Crandall was a private in Captain Ward's Company, Colonel Varner's Regiment in the Rhode Island and Continental lines. My grandfather, Joseph Crandall did not join the military but was appointed by the Rhode Island General Assembly as one of a committee to take Military Census and receive recruits for the town of Westerly, Rhode Island. He also served as Town Clerk, member of the Town Westerly Town Council and Justice of the Peace. I was born 29 October 1774 in Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island, the third child of Elijah Crandall and his first wife, Eunice Broughton Crandall. When I was very young, my mother gave her life in service to this great country. After a company of soldiers passed by our home in Westerly, mother went outside and was attracted by a moan. She found a sick soldier in the shed. She cared for him, contracted the small pox he carried, and died. (This is a family story and is not documented.) My father married Mercy Kenyon a few years later. She was a good mother to me. My father was a great-great grandson of Elder John Crandall, who arrived in Boston in 1635 at the age of 17. He became a minister of the Salem church but adopted the opinions of the Baptists and lost that position. Like others of his belief he was forced out of the Massachusetts. He was an associate of Roger Williams in the founding of Rhode Island, buying land from the Narragansett Indians. The family settled in Westerly, Rhode Island and Elder John was the first pastor of the Westerly (Hopkinton) branch of the Newport Seventh Day Baptist Church. Elder John Crandall died in 1676 at Newport, "where he was 'sojourning' on account of the Indian War, also called King Philip's War." His sixth child, Rev. Joseph Crandall (1661-1737) and his wife, Deborah Hubbard, whose family was also driven from Massachusetts for their religious beliefs, had eight children. Rev. Joseph Crandall served as pastor of the Newport Seventh Day Baptist Church from 1718 to 1737. Joseph and Deborah's third child, also Rev. Joseph Crandall (1684-1750), married Ann Langworthy and their first child, Joseph, my grandfather, served as a civil servant during the Revolutionary War. (Crandall history from Elder John Crandall of Rhode Island and His Descendants) I do not remember my father's family while I was growing up in Westerly, though many of my cousins lived near by. I married Benjamin Barber in Westerly in 1795. He was born October 1765 in Hopkinton, Washington County, Rhode Island, the seventh child of Thomas Barber and Mary Barney. Thomas's great-grandfather, James A. Barber, came to Massachusetts from Berkshire, England in the 1640's. Benjamin's grt. grandfather, Moses, was born in 1652 in Newport, Rhode Island, so they were also a long-time Rhode Island family. Benjamin and I moved to our new home in Galway, Saratoga County, New York, traveling on a white horse. (This is family history) Benjamin purchased a farm and built a log house. Some of his family also moved to Saratoga County and his parents died there. Benjamin was an educated man, a teacher. My grandchildren said later that I while I had no formal education, I was a "keen" woman and "very humerous." Benjamin and I had eight children between 1796 and 1817, all of them born on the farm in Saratoga County. My husband served in the War of 1812, a private in Captain Alexander Dunlap's Company of the New York Regiment of twelve month Volunteers, commanded by Major John Herkimer. He was taken prisoner for about two hours and released. (Service history documented in land grant deed in Marquette County, Wisconsin.) Our first son, Benjamin, was born blind and hard of hearing, but he married twice and had two children. Our second son, Joel was a farmer and he and his wife, Rowena Fay, had six children. Our sixth child, Vernon, was a doctor and he died in a snow storm while making a house call. Bradford Kenyon (B.K.) was our seventh son. He became a Baptist minister. (Family history) In 1839 we sold an acre of our land to our son, Benjamin and his wife, Rhoda, for $200. Three years later we sold 50 acres to our son, Bradford, for $600. (I have these two deeds) My husband died in 1854 and I supported myself by weaving. When my son Bradford and his family moved to Wisconsin two years later, I went with them. We were a family of 13: Myself, my son, B.K., his wife, Rowena Ann, and their three children: William Alonzo, called Lon, Calista, and Oscar; Rowena's father, Abraham West, also a veteran of the War of 1812; Rowena's sister, Minerva Baker and her husband, Israel, and their four children. We traveled on the Erie Canal barge with all our possessions to Buffalo. We then boarded a boat and went through the Great Lakes to Milwaukee in four days and then via horse and wagon to Trenton (near Fox Lake) where we stayed with Rowena's sister, Mary Warren, arriving on May 1st. (Family history plus an article written by Mary Warren that described her trip to Wisconsin using this route.) In October that year I moved with Bradford and his family to Westfield, Marquette County to the Town of Springfield. My son built a log house on our government homestead of 160 acres and fenced half of it for farming. The land was received by Certification of Location to my husband, Benjamin, for "Military Service of the United States as a Private in Captain Dunlap's Company, New York Volunteers, War of 1812. " After we had farmed the land for three and a half years, it was deeded in 1860 to Bradford. My grandson, Lon, later bought a portion or the land and began his family there. From 1856 to 1865, Bradford engaged in both farming and mission work in Marquette County. Bradford was elected Marquette County Superintendent of Schools in 1857. My daughter-in-law, Rowena, 'departed' on 6 November 1858. Bradford married Mary Bromley, who had been a friend of the family for many years, in 1861. I lived with the family, taking care of my three grand-children until my death, of measles, on 12 March, 1863 in Westfield. I was 89 years old. I am buried in the Westfield South Cemetery in Westfield, along with three infant children of my dear grandson, Lon.

When Benjamin was age 51 and Mary "Polly" CRANDALL was age 42 they became the parents of Alonzo Crandall BARBER 12 JAN 1817 in Galway, Saratoga Co., NY.(5) Crandall family records indicate 12 June 1817? There is many whom list Benjamin B. Barber wife as Lucy Crandall. I disagree with this as he shows up in NY Census with wife Mary and then Mary "Polly" shows up with their son Bradford K Barber in Marquette Co., WI. She is buried there with his family. I also wrote and also emailed rountinely with the late Earl P. Crandall with this information and he concured that his records showed that Mary "Polly" Crandall was the wife of Benjamin B. Barber, and that she was the daughter of Elijah & Eunice (Broughton) Crandall. The 1840 Census of Saratoga Co., NY has Benjamin (Sr.) and his wife with son Benjamin (Jr) with his family living next door.

Benjamin served in the war of 1812 as a private in Captain Alexander Dunlap's Company of New York Regiment of twelve month Volunteers, commanded by Major John Herkimer. He was taken prisoner for about two hours and then released.

Benjamin was a Teacher, and a Farmer.
