Barber, Moline, IL: Frederick Ruland was born on the family farm in Westfield, and in 1874 moved with the family to Warrens Mills, Wisconsin. He attended local schools and graduated from Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, a private school that provided an educational curriculum equivalent to high school and community college. He returned to Warrens Mills and became associated with his father in the George Warren Company lumbering and general merchandise store, and related business ventures. In one of his letters, he describes a time when the mills were shipping 100 train cars a month of lumber that was being used to build buildings for the Chicago World's Fair. As was his father, F.R. was committed to developing the land that had been denuded by the lumbering business, as well as providing jobs for the many workers in the growing village. One of these interests was development of cranberry marshes, or bogs. The Barber's were pioneers in this business, which was to stay in the family until the mid 1970's.

Adele Wetherby Barber was born in Mauston, WI, and was one of eight children (brother Clayton and sisters Agnes, Tamson, Mary Augusta, Grace, Alta, and Jessie. Adele had exceptional musical talent, and studied at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, graduating in 1893, and winning the only gold medal for singing awarded that year by the Conservatory. With the financial backing of older sister Agnes and her husband (Will Boorman), she opened a music studio in Madison and taught under the auspices of the University of Wisconsin. She also was active in university and church choirs as a soloist, and spent some time in New Orleans, where she was a soloist in the Coliseum Baptist Church. Her daughter, Mary Agnes, described her parent's marriage as a lifetime love affair, and on those occasions when they were apart, each wrote to the other every day.

Following a courtship that included frequent team and carriage trips between Warrens Mills and Mauston, F. R. and Adele Wetherby were married in 1898, and had five children: Ruland Wetherby b. 3/21/1899, Warrens (married Susan Gulbransen) d. 3/10/84 Sun City, AZ; Frederick Wetherby b. 9/23/1900 Warrens (married Lucy Daniels 1933) d. 5/2/74 Warrens…see biography above; Isadore Adele b. 3/14/04 (married Irwin Krohn, MD, and later, Perry Hull) d. 3/19/58 Black River Falls, WI; William Alonzo b. 4/11/10 Warrens (married Betty Jane Schiefelbein b.8/3/37, Mauston) d. 10/16/86 Warrens; and Mary Agnes b. 3/7/14 Warrens (following teaching career, lived in Sun City, AZ and Orland Park, IL with lifelong friend and teaching colleague, Ethel Harmeling), d. 1/22/02, Warrens.

Adele Barber's obituary relates a lifetime of good deeds and community service, mostly associated with her singing talent, her encouragement of musical interest in young people in the Warrens area, and her involvement with area school, church, and community activities. During the war, she was active in Liberty Bond drives and was awarded a medal by the government for her services.
