By Dan: Daniel Barber grew up in Warrens, WI, attended Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, WI, and later graduated from the University of Wisconsin, where he was member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and active participant in many campus activities. A member of the ROTC program, upon graduation in 1960 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, and served in the Army Medical Service Corps at Fort Sam Houston, Texas where he was the training officer for the only company of "conscientious objectors" in the military. "COs" at that time were comprised of individuals who had a lifetime commitment to pacifism, or religious objections to serving in the military, as well as those who saw this classification as one in which they might escape a military obligation. Dan later served with an Army Reserve field hospital unit at Fort Ord, California during the "Berlin Crisis." Following his military service, he remained in California for a brief time as a management trainee with the Bank of America.
He joined American Hospital Supply Corporation in 1962 as a sales representative in Cleveland, and later transferred to Cincinnati, where he met and later married Jane Grever, a registered nurse from Fort Thomas, KY. Two children were born, Daniel L. (1964 - see biography above) and Lynn Ellen (1966). He remained with AHSC and succeeding companies (Baxter Healthcare Corporation and Caremark International) for 33 years, living in Glenview, IL, Miami, FL, and Libertyville, IL, while serving in corporate and divisional human resources management positions. Actively interested in youth athletics while the family was living in Miami, he became President of the Cutler Ridge Soccer Club, and later was elected President, Florida State Youth Soccer Association. He concluded his professional career as Senior Vice President with Robertson Lowstuter, Inc., Bannockburn, IL, an executive development and career management consulting firm.
Jane Grever Barber was raised in Fort Thomas in northern Kentucky, along with a brother, John ("Jack"). She attended school at St. Thomas and Villa Madonna, and graduated from the Academy of Notre Dame. Jane enrolled in the St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing program (Covington, KY), where she received her diploma as a Registered Nurse. She continued to work actively in nursing for a number of years, as well as in an administrative position with an interior decorating firm in Miami, while continuing to concentrate on involvement in the children's school and extra-curricular activities.
Jane was fond of animals, especially dogs, and devoted many years of volunteer service with the Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) organization, raising and providing early stage training of puppies for ultimate placement as service dogs for individuals with mobility or related disabilities. Her efforts were specially noted in the 2005 CCI Annual Report. (Dan & Lynn can finish this bio with additional high praise of their mother and father
