66. Earl Herman⁹ CLEAVES (John E.⁸, Israel⁷, Eaton Jr.⁶, Eaton Sr.⁵, Robert⁴, John³, William², William¹) (#1335) was born in Oakwood, Paulding Co., OH 22 APR 1885. Earl died 26 SEP 1964 in Lima, Allen Co., OH, at age 79.

He married Carrie Olive Elizabeth ROUGE date unknown. (Carrie Olive Elizabeth ROUGE is #5755.) Carrie was born 18 JAN 1882 in Allen Co., IN. Carrie died SEP 1968 in Lima, Allen Co., OH, at age 86.

When Earl was age 22 and Carrie Olive Elizabeth ROUGE was age 25 they became the parents of Virgil Lamoine CLEAVES 7 MAY 1907 in Townley, Allen Co., IN. When Earl was age 24 and Carrie Olive Elizabeth ROUGE was age 27 they became the parents of Mabel Helen Marion CLEAVES 26 APR 1909 in Baldwin, IN. When Earl was age 26 and Carrie Olive Elizabeth ROUGE was age 29 they became the parents of Raymond Ruland CLEAVES 9 NOV 1911 in Ottoville, OH. When Earl was age 33 and Carrie Olive Elizabeth ROUGE was age 36 they became the parents of Geraldine Dorothy Marie CLEAVES 14 OCT 1918. also seen date of birth of 1911 Where Earl Cleaves, my grandfather was born in 1884 -- the youngest of 11 children. The small farm of his father, John, was about 1 mile north of town according to Paulding County courthouse records that I examined. Earl's mom and dad died at early ages when he was a young boy. He was taken in by a neighboring farmer until legal age of 16. He then became a migrant farm worker in the area. In his early 20's he was smitten by the daughter (Carrie) of an Indiana farmer and his employer, Fred Reuge, born on the Atlantic Ocean during his mother's move from Switzerland to the US. Pregnant with my father, Virgil, she married Earl near Townley IN and they eventually moved to Lima after the birth of Mabel (Indiana) and Ray (Ottoville OH). Geraldine was born in Lima. Earl took a job with the City of Lima's street dept as a street brick layer. He retired from there with a city pension. They owned a home in Lima at 1104 E North St in which Geraldine continued to live until her death about five years ago at age 91.

Geraldine's daughter, Karen, graduated from OhioState, Columbus, with a music degree (violin). She married (Smith) and they lived near Boston for many, many years. Just before her mom died she moved back to OH in a rural area northwest of Columbus.

Come to think of it, Earl and Carrie Cleaves had four grandchildren graduate from OSU, Columbus -- Karen (Geraldine), Larry & Terry (Ray), and Steve (Virgil). Plus a great grandson, Steve's son, Bob, plus a great-great grandson, Patrick (a current Sophomore). He is a son of Doug and grandson of Wes. And on the Stanich side, several of Mel's offspring and grandchildren and Dern's Jeff Miller. Our own "Buckeye Nation".
