CLEAVES Jr., 79, died at 12:34 p.m. Jan. 14, 2007, at St. Rita's Medical Center. He was born Jan. 24, 1927, in Lima. In 1947, he married Dorothy E. Snider, who survives. Mr. Cleaves retired in 1988 as an operator and diesel mechanic from Buckeye Pipeline after 37 years. He was a member of Rousculp Church of Christ. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, joining in 1944 when he was 17 years old. He loved attending church, especially his Sunday school class. His sense of humor, intelligence and love for his family will be greatly missed. He learned his love of cars, especially Fords, from his dad. Although retired, he didn't remain idle. He and his wife traveled and kept busy with activities until health forced him into slowing down. During their life together, they built several houses, raised a family and enjoyed life. He taught by example to those he loved the value of laughter, the essentiality of integrity, the significance of pride in yourself and the gift of being devoted to your family. When he went to heaven, he left all of these treasures with his children and grandchildren, and he will live on through them. He adored his grandchildren, and his great-granddaughter was the light of his life. Survivors also include two sons, David A. (Ellen) Cleaves, of Maryland, and Daniel S. (Sheryl) Cleaves, of Newbern, Tenn.; a daughter, Deborah E. (Richard) Kindle, of West Salem; six grandchildren, Scott (Angel) Kindle, who were his constant companions over the last few years, Melissa Kindle, Jeremy (Kerry) Cleaves, Janelle Cleaves, Courtney Cleaves and Scot Hale; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Kindle. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Cleaves. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Lewis Eastside Chapel. The Rev. Mark Vernick will officiate.
