He married Mahala Emma HOOVER 19 MAR 1892 in Paulding Co., OH. (Mahala Emma HOOVER is #811.) Mahala was born 11 MAR 1872 in Brown Twp., Paulding Co., OH. Also have seen her middle name as Margaret but family records that was provided to me indicated her middle name was Emma ?? Mahala⁽¹⁾ was the daughter of Hiram B. HOOVER and Mary Ann LIGHTHILL.

Mahala died 11 FEB 1947 in Highland Twp., Defiance Co., OH, at age 74.⁽²⁾ She died at her son Frank Cleaves, she lived there in a small out building or home just west of Franks Home on Blanchard Rd. Eva Mae Yoder information that states her middle name is Margaret. This is contrary to what was provided to me from Frank's Family. She may have had dementia or ALZ as she was put in the Toledo Hospital very late in life and after Herbie's death.

When Herbert was age 24 and Mahala Emma HOOVER was age 21 they became the parents of Earl Lawrence CLEAVES 2 DEC 1893 in Auglaize Twp., Paulding Co., OH. When Herbert was age 25 and Mahala Emma HOOVER was age 23 they became the parents of Elmer Grant CLEAVES 27 JUL 1895 in Auglaize Twp., Paulding Co., OH. When Herbert was age 27 and Mahala Emma HOOVER was age 24 they became the parents of Jennie Mae CLEAVES 27 JAN 1897 in Brown Twp., Paulding Co., OH. When Herbert was age 28 and Mahala Emma HOOVER was age 26 they became the parents of Lester Charles CLEAVES 27 MAR 1898 in Brown Twp., Paulding Co., OH. When Herbert was age 29 and Mahala Emma HOOVER was age 27 they became the parents of Victor Francis Sr. CLEAVES 24 JUL 1899 in Brown Twp., Paulding Co., OH. I have seen his name in early life as Therber Cleaves, but everyone called him Herbie. It has been said that he always smiled and seemed like very happy fellow.
