Frederick Wetherby11 BARBER (Frederick Ruland10, William Alonzo9, Bradford Kenyon8, Benjamin B.7, Thomas6, Thomas5, Moses4, James A.3, James2, Thomas1) (#6970) was born in Monroe Co., WI 23 SEP 1900. Frederick died 2 MAY 1974 in Jackson Co., WI, at age 73. Black River Falls His body was interred date unknown in Monroe Co., WI. Warren Mills Cem.

He married Lucy Ellen DANIELS date unknown WI. (Lucy Ellen DANIELS is #6971.) Lucy was born 11 APR 1901 in Monroe Co., WI. Lucy was the daughter of Charles Frank DANIELS and Rose America ANEY. Lucy died 2 MAY 1984 in Rock Island Co., IL, at age 83. By his son Daniel F. Barber, Moline, IL: Frederick Barber was born in Warrens, and graduated from Wayland Academy, Beaver Dam, WI, as had his father. He later enrolled (along with his brother, Ruland) at the University of Chicago, where he received his degree in Economics. While in college, he and "Rudy" played part-time in night club bands, which during the "roaring Twenties" must have been quite the experience. As a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, he was a fraternity brother of Elliot Ness, who later became famous as the leader of the "Untouchables" anti-crime unit in Chicago and elsewhere.

Frederick returned to Warrens and was engaged in the family General Store and cranberry marsh enterprises. He married Lucy Daniels in 1933, and they had two children, Ellen Mae (1934) and Daniel Frederick (1938 - see biography above). For more than 35 years he served as General Manager of the three cranberry marshes and packing facilities of the Wetherby and Union Cranberry companies. He was on the Board of the Indian Trail Cranberry Association, and was named as a state representative to the federal government Cranberry Industry Marketing Committee, with oversight responsibilities for recommending nation-wide cranberry production and distribution quotas. Most of his business skills were self-taught, and he became an expert in personal and corporate taxation, taking personal delight in discovering areas of the tax code that could be used to the advantage of the company or of the many village residents for whom he prepared individual tax returns. He was laid back and soft spoken, a kind and generous "gentle" man, with a dry sense of humor, known affectionately to his family as the (self-proclaimed) "king of the dirt road drivers."

Lucy Daniels grew up on a farm in Coles Valley near Sparta, WI, and later moved with her family into that city. She attended Ripon (Wisconsin) College, became interested in drama, and enrolled in an acting class where she performed in a number of school productions with classmate Spencer Tracy, later to become an Academy Award-winning actor. She told of a field trip where as a prank Tracy put a garter snake in her coat pocket!

After graduation, Lucy returned to Sparta where she became a stenographer and court reporter in the Abel & Goodman law firm. It is said she was the highest paid legal assistant in Monroe County at the time because of her advanced secretarial and stenographic skills.

Following her marriage to Frederick, she became involved in numerous community, church, and local school affairs. She volunteered as a Grey Lady during the WW II, and was thrilled to personally meet boxing champion Joe Louis when he toured the country and visited soldiers at Camp McCoy. She served as President of the local Warrens grade school PTA for years, and was a Monroe County Republican Woman's Committee delegate. During the building of Interstate 94 in the 1960's, she influenced the highway authorities to build a second access/exit ramp at from the highway to Warrens, and was rewarded with an invitation from the Governor to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Family and friends remember her as a very kind, outgoing, and gracious lady.
